About Classes

I love teaching both new and experienced coilers! Please join me at a class to learn how to coil pine needles to create one-of-a-kind baskets, jewelry, ornaments and more!

I teach at the Williamsburg Contemporary Art Center and am always looking for new venues. If you know of an art center or gallery in Southern Virginia that would like to hold pine needle classes, please let me know! You can also arrange classes in your home for you and your friends for a fun day of crafting, food, and friendship. Email me or join the mailing list for information.

Types of classes

Beginning and Intermediate Pine Needle Basketry

In this 6 hour class participants will create their own pine needle basket. We start with a drilled wood center, then learn to start a coil, add needles and thread, build the sides, and complete the basket. Each basket is unique because class participants choose their own color combinations as well as make other style choices. Experienced coilers may choose to add beads or decorative stitching.

Pine Needle Jewelry

Pine Needles aren’t just great for making baskets!  In this 3-4 hour class participants will create their own coiled pine needle pendant or pin.  There will be choices for centers, dyed or natural pine needles, threads as well as beads to embellish your creation.  No experience is necessary but if you have coiled before, you will have the opportunity to expand your skills.

Pine Needle Ornaments

Pine Needles can be coiled to make naturally unique ornaments! In this 4 hour class we learn to coil on a variety of centers while adding decorative touches through beading, stitching, and embellishments. You will take home a one-of-a-kind ornament which makes a wonderful gift or keepsake.

Pine needle barrettes/shawl pins

In this 3-4 hour class participants will create their own coiled pine needle hair barrette or shawl/scarf pin.  There will be choices for centers, dyed or natural pine needles, threads as well as beads to embellish your creation.  You will learn to start and end the pine needle coil, make “windows” for the stick and to add beads between the coils. No experience is necessary but if you have coiled before, you will have the opportunity to expand your skills.
